Immigration Bluster

Normally, I can not let a "hot topic" go by without some comment. The Immigration Debate is an exception. Border patrol, guest worker, fast track citizenship, catch & release are big yawners. Quite simply, President Bush is wrong, the Neocons are wrong and the liberals are wrong. And until they start focusing on the REAL issue(s), I will remain outside of this debate.

Nothing they have proposed will work. Nothing.

The underlying problem is that the US per capita GDP is 4 times Mexico's. Further, the US GDP is growing faster then Mexico's which will only increase the difference. With that sort of disparity, you can not stem the tide of illegals for very long. It is like trying to solve the drug problem by destroying crops - if the demand is there someone will supply it at the right price.

The solution is to work with Mexico to grow its economy so it is attractive for Mexicans to remain in Mexico. Unless you do that, the problem will remain.

One last thing: the public does not really give a damn. If you could guarantee that illegals could not collect welfare, you would satisfy 95% of the public.
